Description:
Among the beautiful homes lining the coast of La Jolla in San Diego, an area where ultra-luxury properties reign supreme, this glass and concrete towered home redefines contemporary modern-luxury. This is a very rare, 4-level, Jonathan Segal designed private residence and was the last home photographed by famed mid-century modern architectural photographer, Julius Shulman.

Reflecting brilliant design, execution and detailed craftsmanship in every aspect, this awe inspiring home is purposely designed to reflect a close relationship with the ocean and shoreline. The home is oriented perfectly southward to maximize sun exposure during the day, and dramatic views of sunsets over the ocean in the evenings.

The stunning multi-level property overlooks one of the most esteemed surf breaks in San Diego, Bird Rock, and is situated on a pristine 62-foot wide protected, unobstructed stretch of La Jolla's Pacific Oceanfront shoreline.

The home is recognized as an architectural masterpiece, built as a massive, four-level poured-in-place polished concrete structure, and then enveloped in glass and steel. Warmth was achieved by layering American walnut on all the ceilings, including the top deck’s cantilever cut-out, kitchen cabinets, interior doors and floors.

Every room above grade is directed to the ocean through the use of vertical and horizontal planes. The defining visual edges of this ocean front residence promote an outdoor connection through the use of three stories of expansive glass walls, and a deck area that reaches to the sea.

On every corner, walls are replaced with glass to maximize the breathtaking views, and large two-inch thick glass floors allow sunlight to flood the subterranean level. Natural light also comes in from the below-grade courtyard-like light well, which is centered on a fire feature.

The master floor is a jaw dropping envelope within the envelope, with floor to ceiling windows, wall of cabinets and integrated headboard. In the master bath, adjacent to the glass-walled steam shower, is a sculptural stand-alone soaking tub by Wet. The panoramic ocean views from the master floor are simply spectacular.

Above the master level is an outdoor kitchen area that leads to an incredible ocean view deck and Jacuzzi spa, all framed by the walnut lined, cantilevered roof top.

Downstairs is the subterranean floor, where fresh ocean air streams in from the light-well courtyard through two sliding doors that lead to the lounge, downstairs kitchen, media room and two more bedrooms.

In terms of arts, furniture fixtures and accessories for the four floors, the home features modern classics: an Eames lounge chair and ottoman; a marble-topped Eero Saarinen oval table with tulip chairs from Knoll; and chrome plated brass ball-jointed USM Haller storage and office modular units. For contemporary, cleaned-lined pieces, the home features large and low upholstered sofas, sections and flexible seating from Minotti; a tufted leather sofa for Della Espada; Gaggenau appliances; Dorbracht bathroom and kitchen hardware throughout the house (even on the top deck); Fine art and metal sculptures custom-made for the home are displayed throughout.

Besides the clean modern lines, minimalist style, and maximized ocean views, this home incorporates green technology, and is almost entirely powered by highly efficient solar panels. The design includes Smart Home Technology, low voltage Lutron® lighting floor heat and an extensive subsurface draining system collects ground water for recycling. Because of San Diego's coastal climate, cross ventilation naturally cools the home, while heating needs are satisfied through high efficiency hydronic radiant in floor heating throughout.

This home has been featured in the LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle, magazine spreads and countless architectural articles and blogs. This is a rare opportunity to stay in a vacation rental, that happens to be an undeniably gorgeous, architectural landmark.
