Fishing in Mission Bay San Diego
Discover A Year-Round Bounty in Mission Bay, San Diego
Fish the bountiful waters of the Pacific Ocean at San Diego’s Mission Bay, the centerpiece of Mission Bay Park, the largest man-made aquatic park in the USA, offering 27 miles of scenic shoreline for anglers to experience rod bending excitement year-round. The bay bite goes on throughout the entire year and you are pretty much guaranteed a bite, making it even more fun for the kids. So, bait up and get ready to hold on tight for the ultimate fishing adventure in Mission Bay.
An Anglers Paradise
Mission Bay is a Spotted Bay Bass paradise, here they run larger and are a better quality than those in San Diego Bay. Sand Bass and Calico Bass are slightly fewer due to the shallower waters of Mission Bay. Other popular targets are Halibut and Corvina, as well as Leopard Sharks and Bat Rays. Throw some ghost shrimp on a line and you are likely to find many other species of sand dwelling fish. A great time to fish is on the incoming or outgoing tide as the fish tend to be more active with a little water movement. Common areas to fish are Bahia Point, Sail Bay and Quivera Basin. There are scattered weed beds, boat docks, bridges and patches of eelgrass around the Bay so if you are not getting bites, move to different water as generally, if you find the eelgrass, you can find the bass. Fish from the shore, charter a boat from Dana Landing or explore the waters by kayak. For a little bit of pier fishing, a favorite for the kids, Crystal Pier is one of the top piers in California due to the number of good quality fish caught there. Not only a great spot to catch Barred Surfperch, Corbina, Shovelnose Guitarfish and Halibut, it draws the Lobsters too. Or soak some bait and wait for a tug at San Diego’s longest pier on nearby Ocean Beach with a great bait and tackle store and a café to refuel.
San Diego ’ s Water Wonderland
Mission Bay is San Diego’s Water Wonderland offering each one of its visitors a fun water adventure, from surfing and kiteboarding to stand up paddling and scuba diving. It’s not only about the water activities here. Picnic on the shores of Ski Beach, roller blade along the oceanfront bike path, make smores on the fire pits or play with your four-legged friend on Fiesta Islands off leash dog beach. The excellent amenities include a kid’s playground, life-guard protected swimming beaches, nine marinas and six public ramps: Santa Clara Point, Dana Landing, Ski Beach, South Shores, Campland Marina and De Anza Cove. You can fish anywhere you want unless there are ‘No Fishing’ signs posted and all you need is a valid California Sport Fishing License with a saltwater enhancement stamp.
